The longest uphill off-road route in Val di Sole leading to an 'enchanted' valley.
A very appealing and striking trail for it’s numerous points of historical and natural interest on the way (iron and coal mines for example, and larch trees hundreds of years old) which meanders through the Val Comasine (adjacent to Val di Pejo) with imposing and impressive scenery such as the Ortles-Cevedale mountain range. From an athletic point of view this course is very challenging as it is for the most part uphill.
Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.
From the church in Cogolo and crossing the provincial road in Val di Pejo take the cycle path in the direction of Ossana until arriving at 'The Mulino' where the cycle path meets the road to Comasine. Go uphill on this road until arriving in the village (Comasine) and continuing towards the church of Santa Lucia in Val Comasine. This uniformly sloping road continues uphill bypassing Stavion (here ther are some mountain huts and barns) and some signs for ‘Miniere di Magnetite’ until, after a few kilometres, reaching Campo di Comasine (2.147 m) the dominant ridge in Val di Pejo from where you can clearly see the impressive Ortles-Cevedale mountains.
At this point there also indications and information about local nature and in particular the old larch trees, saved from being felled; in the past these trees were cut down to make charcoal, used for welding the iron from the mines. For this reason one can note the black terrain here, residual from the charcoal industry. From here go downhill through the valley (Val di Comasine) to subsequently climb to Malga Mason (2.176 m) the point where the surviving Larch trees can be found. Return on the same path down to the church of Santa Lucia in Comasine. The path from here leads to the cycle path and your return to Cogolo.
We recommend always carrying a repair kit: inner tube, pump, mastic, patches and an emergency repair kit.
