Medium difficulty itinerary developed within the Stelvio National Park along path SAT 139 called "Dei Todeschi" precisely because it was built by the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War.

The route has a very important historical value and recalls the history of Val di Peio and beyond during the years of the Great War. The path was named this way because it was built by soldiers during the First World War battle. History can also be seen along the trail where you can still admire some military ruins dating back to that period.

Suggestions

The trekking starts from the Doss dei Gembri Refuge, where we recommend stopping to enjoy a dessert or a typical dish of Trentino and Solandro cuisine. Along the route, you will also encounter Lake Pian Palù where you can enjoy a break.

A section of the trail is equipped with a rope, so we suggest you pay attention.

Safety information

To face a mountain hike we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your fitness level. If in doubt, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the schedules of the lifts if your itinerary includes their use. Remember that the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to current conditions and thus depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. Therefore, get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving
  • leave information about your itinerary, estimated return time, and carry your phone with you
  • pay attention to signs and markings found on the path: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white brush strokes on stones or trees
  • book in advance the hut or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep
  • never abandon waste in altitude, and if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or huts you visit
  • if you spot wild animals along the route, stay on the path you are following, do not get too close, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and scaring them

Starting point

Doss dei Gembri Restaurant

Directions

Starting from Peio Fonti, take the Peio Fonti - Tarlenta cable car and then the chairlift which will allow you to reach the Doss dei Gembri Restaurant located at 2,316 meters altitude. Once you reach the refuge, start along the SAT 138 path towards Val de la Mite and then turn left onto the SAT 139 path. It is from this latter path, called "Dei Tedeschi," that the trail gets its name. It was built by the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War and runs around 2,300 meters with a spectacular view of the Taviela and Cadini peaks. After crossing the footbridge over the Taviela stream, continue on a section of equipped trail, served by a fixed safety rope until you reach La Colem. Continuing to the right you will reach Colle Cadini and then a gentle climb alongside some military ruins from the first world conflict finally brings you to the Valley of the Bears. Here you take the SAT 122 path until you cross the SAT 124 path, which you follow to Malga Giumela and Lake Pian Palù. Take a relaxing break along its shores before returning to Fontanino and then to Peio Fonti.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE:

Alternatively, once you reach La Colem, leave the Dei Tedeschi trail and follow the SAT 139B path descending towards Val Cadini and after a few meters, at the fork, take the SAT 129 path until passing a pretty waterfall. Shortly after you will come across a second fork and follow the signs for Malga Frattasecca - Cadini Waterfall on path SAT 129B. The trail here enters the forest until it crosses the Military Road SAT 124 reaching Malga Frattasecca, where we recommend stopping to taste a good dessert or a regional dish. From the hut, return to Peio Fonti.

Public transportation

You can reach Peio Fonti by public bus line MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download the outbound and return schedules).

How to get there

Follow the SS42 to Fucine and once at the junction for Val di Peio, exit right onto the SP87 until you reach Peio Fonti.

Where to park

You can leave your car in the paid parking area near the start of the Peio Fonti - Tarlenta cable car.
