Safety information

To face a mountain hike we suggest you:

• choose a route suitable for your preparation. If in doubt, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices
• prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the schedules of the lifts, if your itinerary includes their use. Remember that the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the current conditions and depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, get well informed about the route and its conditions before starting
• leave information about your itinerary, approximate return time and bring your mobile phone
• pay attention to indications and signs on the route: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white marks on stones or trees
• book in advance the hut or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep
• never leave rubbish at high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or huts you visit
• if you spot wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the path you are following, not approach too closely, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash to avoid it instinctively chasing them, frightening them

Starting point

Directions

Starting from the small village of Menas, located in the Municipality of Mezzana, you begin the uphill dirt road. Continuing through the larch forest that gradually becomes less dense, the road starts to level out and in front of you will open the view of a pasture, a wide expanse of green meadows surrounding the mountain hut, where in summer you can find cows grazing that spend their summer months here, feeding on mountain grass that gives their milk a truly authentic and genuine flavor. In these pastures, you can also spot the destination of this walk, which is the Malga del Monte Bassa located at almost 1,700 meters of altitude. For the return, you take the same path back.

Public transportation

You can reach the starting point by the regular bus MALÉ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download the schedules for outward and return) up to Pellizzano and then by the bus PELLIZZANO - MENAS (download the schedules for outward and return) up to Menas.

How to get there

Follow the SS42 and at the junction for Menas, Ortisè, Castello, Termenago turn right and follow the SP140 to reach Menas.

Where to park

You can park in the lots you will find in the village of Menas.

To face a mountain hike it is always useful to:

• wear trekking boots suitable for uneven, irregular, and wet ground, long pants, a cap, and sunglasses
• put in your backpack a waterproof jacket, a fleece sweater, hat and gloves, sunscreen, minimum spare clothing
• bring a water bottle and snacks for energy drops (dried fruit, bars or chocolate)
• don’t forget a camera or mobile phone to capture the views and scenes you like the most. If you want, you can share them on social media using #visitvaldisole
