Safety information

Rules for mountain walks:

• The accessibility of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving. You can do this by contacting the Information Office nearest to you
• If you plan to reach a mountain hut or refuge, make sure they are open and, if you intend to stop for food or accommodation, call them in advance to book
• Leave information about your itinerary and always carry your mobile phone with you
• In case of an accident, call 112
• Never leave waste in the mountains and, if possible, avoid leaving waste at the refuges or mountain huts you visit
• If you spot wild animals along the route, please stay on the path you are following, do not approach too closely, do not shout, and keep your dog on a leash to avoid it instinctively chasing them and scaring them

Starting point

Directions

Once you reach Fontanino, in Peio Fonti (be aware that in summer the road is closed and you can reach the starting point of the route by the Stelviobus Peio shuttle bus) the route develops in Val del Monte, inside the Stelvio National Park, along the shores of this emerald-colored lake, reaching Malga Palù in about an hour's walk. For the return, you can take the same way back or complete the loop around the lake, heading towards Malga Giumella and then returning to the starting point.

Public transportation

You can reach the locality Fontanino with the regular bus MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download the outbound and return timetables) up to Peio Fonti and then continue on foot for about 1 hour or, in the summer months, you can use the convenient shuttle bus service Stelviobus Peio that from Peio Fonti will take you to Fontanino.

How to get there

Follow the SS42 and once you pass Cusiano, in the Municipality of Ossana, at the junction for Val di Peio, exit to the right and follow the SP87 to Peio Fonti.

Where to park

You can leave your car in the parking lot near Fontanino. In the summer months, when the road to Fontanino is closed, you can leave your car at Peio Fonti.

For this walk, we recommend wearing hiking boots and a hat and bringing a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a water bottle in your backpack.
