This route, which connects two picturesque mountain huts, takes us to discover spectacular centuries-old larches, whose roots date back to the late 1300s.
The oldest Solander larches in the Trentino sector of Stelvio Park are located above Malga Pontevecchio and on the trail to Malga Verdignana. These are centuries-old larches dating back to the late 1300s. This themed route is one of four “Dendrochronology Trails of Stelvio National Park,” devised thanks to dendrochronology, i.e., through the study of the annual rings of trees.

Suggestions

Thanks to specific dendrochronology studies, based on cores taken from living trees and slices from old stumps analyzed, it was possible to reconstruct that these old trees are witnesses of the climate in Val di Sole during the “Little Ice Age” (1580-1850) and during the present global warming (since 1850).
