High altitude hike among friendly marmots and historic remains of the Great War.
High difficulty route that climbs along the wide meadows of the Tonale, animated by friendly marmots. The trail reaches the Passo Contrabbandieri and Rifugio Bozzi, where you can admire the curious remains of the Great War. Along the path leading to the Montozzo Lakes, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the entire Val di Peio.
To undertake a mountain hike we suggest you:
From the Valbiolo chairlift parking lot, you reach the Hotel La Mirandola near which you take the SAT 111 trail up to the Passo Contrabbandieri at 2679 meters altitude. During the ascent, you can spot curious marmots peeking out from their burrows dug in the high mountain vegetation. Once you reach the Pass, you descend to Rifugio Bozzi where you can admire the remains of the Great War, belonging to both the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies. From the hut, you then climb to the Forcella del Montozzo and by following a path with a splendid view of Val di Peio, you reach the Montozzo Lakes. The return is planned on the same trail.
Alternatively, it is possible to start from Fontanino (in the summer months it will be necessary to park at Peio Fonti and reach Fontanino by Stelviobus, check the schedules here) and by following the SAT 110 trail you arrive at Malga di Celentino. From here, take the SAT 137 trail which shortly afterwards intersects with the SAT 111B trail that leads to Forcellina del Montozzo at 2613 meters. To reach the small lakes, follow the unmarked trail and after crossing the scree in half an hour, you arrive at the first small lake.
You can reach Passo del Tonale with the train TRENTO - MALE' - MEZZANA to Malé and then with the Trentino Trasporti line bus MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - VERMIGLIO - TONALE (download outbound and return timetables).
Take the SS42 to Passo del Tonale.
