This ski mountaineering ascent has a medium-low difficulty level and follows along an ancient glacial moraine that extends along the Eastern Monte Tonale. The track intersects with the original road to Tonale and passes by the San Bartolomeo Hospice, built in the 1200s. Finally, you reach Malga Valbiolo, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break, tasting typical dishes from the Trentino tradition while admiring the Cima Presanella (the highest peak in Trentino), the Adamello to the south, and all the way to the Brenta Dolomites, Gardena Dolomites, and Catinaccio Dolomites to the east.

Suggestions

We recommend you take a break at Malga Valbiolo, where you can savor delicious dishes of tradition accompanied by a breathtaking view.

Safety information

The stability of the snowpack is subject to sudden and unpredictable changes. Always consult the avalanche bulletin (on www.meteotrentino.it or other available websites for your area) and gather detailed information about the current weather conditions from the Alpine Guides Office of Val di Sole. The GPX tracks are purely indicative of the route and should not be followed without a prior evaluation of the slopes at the time of the excursion.

From January 1st, 2022, it is mandatory for ALL skiers to have an insurance policy covering liability for damages or injuries caused to third parties. The revision of the mountain safety code requires all minors to wear helmets and prohibits skiers from consuming alcohol.

Directions

The route starts from Passo del Tonale, specifically from the Valbiolo parking lot. From here, you ascend along the ancient moraine that extends on the Eastern Monte Tonale and pass by the San Bartolomeo Hospice, built back in 1200. From there, you continue to ascend steadily until reaching the new artificial lake Valbiolo and then arrive at the homonymous mountain hut, open in winter, where you can stop for lunch. From the hut, you can also enjoy a splendid panoramic view, ranging from Cima Presanella to the Adamello and the Brenta Dolomites, and to the Catinaccio. The descent is very easy and follows the track alongside the Valbiolo slope.

Public transportation

You can reach Passo del Tonale by taking the TRENTO - MALE' - MEZZANA train to the town of Mezzana (download the departure and return schedules) and then take the Trentino Trasporti bus to Passo del Tonale (download the departure and return schedules).

How to get there

Follow the state road SS42 until you reach Passo del Tonale.

Where to park

You can leave your car at the Valbiolo Chairlift parking lot.
For all ski mountaineering excursions, appropriate clothing is recommended even in the event of sudden drops in temperature. It is necessary to wear suitable technical clothing that does not get wet when in contact with snow (such as Gore-Tex), gloves, a hat, sunglasses, and protective sunscreen.

It is mandatory to have with you the self-rescue kit consisting of Artva-Shovel-Probe (which can optionally be rented, see the shops where it is available for rent here). It is also advisable to wear a helmet (for minors, wearing a helmet is mandatory) or other active protection systems (e.g., backpacks with ABS-Airbag systems).

In case of hard or icy snow, the use of crampons is recommended
