This simple route develops entirely within the Stelvio National Park, passing in front of Italy's most beautiful power plant, the Pont Hydroelectric Power Plant. The route then reaches the fascinating and characteristic farms of the Val di Peio.
A simple walk that develops in the charming Val di Peio, completely immersed in the Stelvio National Park. It starts from the pretty Chiesetta di Pegaia, which with its simple structure, stands solitary in the green meadows along the road which from Cogolo leads to Malga Mare. The route then continues passing in front of the historic Cogolo Hydroelectric Power Plant, the guardian of the energy produced by the impetuous waters coming from the peaks of the Careser, then reaching the curious farms of Fratta Plana and Guilnova.
Rules for mountain walks:
Starting from the parking lot located near the ancient Chiesetta di Pegaia, a unique church with very simple and bare architecture, situated along the road that goes from Cogolo to the Val de la Mare, you reach the homonymous Malga. From here, the route continues until it reaches the historic Pont Hydroelectric Power Plant. We recommend taking some time to visit this facility, built in the 1920s, which fully reflects the elegant and unique style of those years. The power plant guide will tell you the story behind the operation of this plant, which for over a hundred years has used the sparkling waters of the streams originating from the Careser Glacier, in the Ortles-Cevedale group, to convert them into electricity. From here, following the waters of the Noce River, you reach the characteristic Masi di Fratta Plana. The walk then returns to Pont along the left bank of the Noce Bianco until you arrive at the curious Masi di Guilnova.
You can reach the village of Cogolo di Peio by the Trentino Trasporti bus line MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download timetables for outbound and return).
From the stop, follow the provincial road until you see the sign on your right for Malga Mare and continue on foot for about 20 minutes until you reach the Chiesetta di Pegaia, the starting point of the itinerary.
Follow the SS42 to Ossana and at the junction turn right to Val di Peio. Continue straight, follow the SP87, and proceed for about 5 km until Cogolo di Peio. From here, follow the signs for Malga Mare, turning right and continue for about 1 kilometer until the small Chiesetta di Pegaia.
You can leave your car near the Chiesetta di Pegaia.
To undertake this walk we recommend wearing hiking boots and a hat and carrying a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a water bottle in your backpack.
