Starting point

Val di Sole Cycling Path - the crossroads of the SS42 and the road to Ortisè

Directions

The itinery begins at the crossroads of the SS42 and the n 140 for Termenago, Ortisè and Menàs. This road can be easily reached from the villages of either Mezzana or Pellizzano along the cycle path to the road towards the River Noce and crossing the bridge (Pont de la Caore). Taking the n. 140, a quiet and little used road which passes through the vast pastureland, most of which is uncultivated, a steep uphill ride will bring you firstly to the small village of Termenago (you will pass the antique bell-tower dating from 1322, and the steps of the ‘new’ church dating back to 1850, and Castello (with its typical crenellated bell tower built in 1500) and arriving to the village of Ortisè (1.477 m). Here you can enjoy a well deserved, drink from the fountain near the church (Take note of the monument dedicated to D.Giacomo Bresadola the famous mycologist. There is a wonderful view of the Val di Sole and its villages, of Passo Tonale, and the Brenta and Presanella mountains.Following the signs for Alpe Pozze the road surpasses the village and becomes a dirt road through the woods and past the alpine buildings and eventually gets easier. Keeping left in the direction of Baita Pozze, you come to the wide area where the malgas are. Here, the road with its wide bends arrives at Baita Pozze; after about 600 metres you will arrive at a hairpin bend and on the left is a small path (be careful here!!) which gradually descends towards the ridge of the Vegaia. After a short while this slightly stepped road brings you to the small lake of Celentino (2.069 m) only visible in the early summer months. The view of the Vioz (3.645 m) and the Presanella (3.556 m) is magnificent from here. The now flatter path running alongside the lake, in the direction of Val di Pejo up to the newly refurbished Malga Campo and an agritur. Leaving again on a steep wooded road which leads down to the village of Celentino (1.264 m). From here there is a unique view of the village Comasine and its solitary small church of Santa Lucia. Follow the provincial road to Strombiano; into the village and out again following the signs for Cusiano (homeland of Quirino Bezzi, historian and mountain lover). Leading to the old dirt road until reaching the junction of the state road SS42 and the provincial road of the Val di Pejo. Continue on the SS42 to Cusiano and almost immediately Pellizzano with its beautiful gothic church of Santa Maria.

We recommend always carrying a repair kit: inner tube, pump, mastic, patches and an emergency repair kit.
