Suggestions

The detour to the charming Lake Barco is about 40 minutes uphill.

From Valpiana you can also reach the Lake of the roe deer. Take a wide dirt road to the left that climbs moderately through the dense fir forest and descends to the parking lot of Lake Caprioli-Fazzon (45 minutes).

Safety information

As you can imagine, the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before setting out, check the route status by contacting the refuge managers along your route, mountain guides, the visitor centers of natural parks, and tourist offices.

Starting point

Ossana

Directions

From the village of Ossana, climb the steep road that from the church of S. Vigilio leads to Loc. Valpiana. After a few kilometers at the entrance of the homonymous valley, in Loc. Sant’Antonio, turn right towards Malga del Doss. The road, with moderate slope and numerous hairpin bends, climbs through the dense fir forest reaching the edges of the pasture of the malga. Shortly before it, about 300 meters, after a long diagonal, near a hairpin bend, signs indicate the route to Lake Barco-Vermiglio. The road now continues with a right turn into a steep climb along a path that after 100 meters joins a forest road. Continue climbing until the end of this road, where a partly marshy path crosses numerous streams joining the SAT path no. 205 that from Vermiglio leads to Lake Barco. (The lake is reachable on foot from here in about 40 minutes). Follow the SAT path no. 205 downhill for about 200 meters until you meet the forest road Palù-Barco. After passing the Masi di Palù and Solcar junction, a long descent leads to the Masi di Volpaia and to the cross-country ski track road which, skirting the meadows, leads to the small lakes of Vermiglio, to Masi Poia and downhill to Ossana where the medieval castle on the Ossana hill is worth a visit.

How to get there

From Bergamo-Brescia: follow the SS42 of the Tonale.

From Bologna-Verona and the Brenner: A22 Brenner exit Trento Nord if coming from the south, exit San Michele all’Adige if coming from the north. Continue towards Cles, Val di Non, along the SS43 and, after passing Cles, take the SS42 towards Passo del Tonale, Val di Sole.

Where to park

Some parking lots in the center of the village or the parking lot at the nearby sports center.

We always recommend carrying a repair kit: inner tube, pump, glue, patches, and a set of tools for quick repairs.
