Suggestions

Look carefully around you: it’s not every day you walk through such evocative landscapes that tell you about the past, tradition and nature conservation.

Safety information

For snow hiking activities, follow these guidelines:

  • inform yourself well about the route and its conditions before leaving. You can do this by contacting the nearest tourist information office;
  • the day before the hike, check the weather forecast and the avalanche bulletin;
  • if you plan to reach an alpine hut or refuge, make sure they are open and, if you intend to stop to eat or sleep, call them in advance to book;
  • before leaving, if you don’t feel well, postpone the outing until you feel better;
  • never leave waste on the mountain;
  • if you spot wild animals along the route, please do not approach, do not shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and scaring them.

Starting point

SS42, 2 km beyond Vermiglio towards Passo Tonale

Directions

Vermiglio (1,300m) - Verniana farmhouses (1,716 m) - Saviana Alpine hut (1,917 m)

Follow the SS42 towards Passo Tonale and, about 2 km past the town of Vermiglio, leave the car near the dirt road leading to Val Verniana. Continue on foot along the snowcat-packed forest road passing the 'Plazola', a wide curve with a panoramic view over the upper Val di Sole, until you reach Val Verniana. Here take a moment to pause and observe the spectacle around you: the characteristic alpine farmhouses, the nearby peaks among which stand out the almost 3,000 meters of Monte Redival and, on the opposite side, the Queen, Cima Presanella with its unmistakable profile. We call it 'the Queen' because with its 3,558 meters it is the highest peak located entirely within the Trentino territory. Proceed along the snowy forest road towards Val Saviana until you reach a wide clearing, just below Saviana Alpine hut. To return to the parking lot, retrace your path back.

A longer alternative to this route starts from the town of Vermiglio. In this case park near the cemetery and walk towards the charming Church of Santa Caterina up to 'Dazi'. From here follow the first stretch of the old road that once led to Tonale until you join the route described above, exactly near the fork that on one side leads to Passo del Tonale and on the other towards Verniana.

How to get there

Follow the SS42 towards Passo Tonale and, about 2 km past the town of Vermiglio, leave the car near the dirt road leading to Val Verniana.

Where to park

Park at the entrance of the dirt road indicating Val Verniana.
