This medium-difficulty itinerary allows you to ride through the cool forests of the Val Meledrio, a valley that fascinates with its wild nature characterized by dense fir and conifer woods that will grant you a refreshing break during hot summer days. The itinerary passes near the Ecomuseum Val Meledrio, where you can observe a still operating Venetian sawmill, an old lime kiln once used for the production of lime, and a hydroelectric power plant, an ancient hammer activated by the force of the waters of the Meledrio stream, until reaching the Pison waterfalls with their clear and sparkling waters.

Starting point

Church of San Lorenzo in Dimaro

Directions

The itinerary begins at the Church of San Lorenzo in Dimaro, where there is a convenient and large parking lot with a reserved space. From the parking lot, you get in the saddle and pedal towards the hamlet of Carciato, from where a dirt road begins that gradually climbs towards the wild Val Meledrio. If you have time available, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Ecomuseum Val Meledrio, where you can admire a still functioning Venetian sawmill, an ancient forge where iron was worked, and a lime kiln once used for the production of lime.

Right in the locality of Fosinace, where industrial archaeology remains are present, you cross the Meledrio stream (on a sufficiently wide bridge also suitable for the passage of handbikes) to reach the road called “of the Emperors,” once used to go uphill to the former Mondifrà Hospice.

Once you arrive at the hydroelectric power plant that uses the roaring waters of the Meledrio stream to produce energy, the slope becomes significant. In this section of the itinerary, for those pedaling on a handbike, it might be necessary to have a little help due to the slippery ground. The route then develops in a small loop on a path carved into the rock overlooking the gorge of the Meledrio stream (maximum safety guaranteed by a protective wooden barrier) and leads to the bridge over the Pison waterfall.

The route, reaching its highest point at 1,215 m a.s.l. near Malga Presson bassa, returns on the opposite side of the valley on a forest road on the slopes of Dosso S. Brigida. Part of the itinerary ridden uphill is retraced downhill until the State Road, which is crossed thanks to a convenient underpass. The return to the starting point is on a comfortable path that crosses the town of Dimaro, until reaching the starting point again.
