A simple route to admire the traditional architecture of the farmsteads and to understand the rural landscape of the Val di Peio.

What is a maso? What is the difference between maso and malga? And that between meadow and pasture? The walk will answer these and other curiosities about the landscape of Val di Peio, starting from the historic wooden and stone structures called “masi.” The circular route develops on comfortable valley floor forest roads and a short stretch of path crosses pastures and skirts meadows with the characteristic scattered farmsteads. The easy route is charming in every season for its colors and scents, for the silences interspersed with the babbling of streams. Along the path, you can encounter both farmsteads that have partially maintained their original function and others converted into residences, hotels, warehouses, simply unused, or ruins.

Small Church of San Bartolomeo – Pegaia (Cogolo di Peio)

Directions

The circular route starts at the Church of Pegaia and after entering the path, bordered by traditional dry stone walls, it continues through woods, pastures, and mown meadows. Along the way you encounter the characteristic farmsteads: el Mass dei Veneri, el Mass del Beniamino, le Iscle, where a small hut was a providential refuge for shepherds. Beyond the farmsteads of Ogaöla, you reach the Crapeli area, then the meadows and some scattered farmsteads: Frata Plana and, on the opposite side of the Noce River, the farmsteads of la Vicla. On the way back, you skirt the meadows of Le Lame, with their related farmsteads and lower down el Mass del Matè, the mown meadows of Pralonc, and the cluster of farmsteads of la Guilnova. Beyond the farmsteads of Pont, on our right we can admire the imposing architecture of the hydroelectric power plant, built in the 1920s. The route ends at el Mass de Pegaia near the homonymous church.
