The route develops within the Stelvio National Park and reaches some alpine huts of Val di Rabbi, where in summer the livestock is moved for summer grazing.

Moderately demanding snowshoe hike, developed along paths and forest roads marked and signposted by specific signs showing a snowshoe.

This itinerary offers long sunny and panoramic sections. Being inside the Stelvio National Park, it is not unusual to spot wildlife. If you happen to encounter any animals, please do not run towards them, do not shout and avoid sudden movements that may frighten them.
We suggest you savor the silence of nature in winter and the snow-covered landscapes it offers you.

Suggestions

If you do the hike on a not too cold day, we suggest a stop at Malga Terzolasa or Malga Caldesa Alta, both closed in winter, to enjoy the views over Val di Rabbi and the Dolomites and to relax in the reassuring silence of the woods.

Safety information

When hiking in the snow, follow these guidelines:

make sure you are well informed about the route and conditions before setting out. You can do this by contacting your nearest information office;
the day before your excursion, check the weather forecast and the avalanche bulletin;
if you expect to reach an alpine dairy or mountain refuge, make sure that this will be open and, if you intend to stop to eat or sleep, call beforehand to book;
if you do not feel well before you set off, postpone the excursion until you feel better;
never leave litter in the mountains and, if possible, avoid leaving your rubbish at mountain refuges or malgas that you visit;
if you spot wild animals along the way, we invite you to not go too near, not shout and to keep your dog on a lead, to stop it instinctively chasing and scaring the animal.

Starting point

Park in Cavallar

Directions

From the Cavallar car park, located above the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Rabbi, the route follows the summer trail that rises gradually up around hairpin bends through a silent larch wood until it reaches the wide snowy meadows of the malghe. Close to Malga Artisè (Malga Terzolasa) the route takes you up along the underlying pastures until it reaches the malga (1,890 m asl). Here we suggest you take a break to admire the views of Val di Rabbi and the surrounding mountains. After your regenerating pause, continue along the path to Malga Cespedè (Malga Samocleva – 1,892 m asl) and, following the folds in the ridges that drop down from the top of Sas Forà, after the deep valley of Lake Corvo, you will reach Malga Paludè Alta (Malga Caldesa Alta – 2,054 m asl), the highest point of your excursion. From here the view sweeps over Val di Rabbi and the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites, so take advantage of this and take a break to gather your strength before the descent.
Continue downhill along an old mule track and in just under an hour you will reach Malga Paludè Bassa (Malga Caldesa Bassa - 1,835 m asl) and from here through woods and open spaces you will be back in the Cavallar car park, where you left your car.

How to get there

From the S.P. 86 provincial road in Val di Rabbi, follow signs for Cavallar, which you can reach from Piazzola.

Check beforehand whether you can actually reach the car park in the winter, as due to snow and ice the secondary roads are not always feasible for some kinds of cars.

Here is a list of items you should have with you when you go snowshoeing:

waterproof hiking boots;
snowshoes and hiking poles. To hire these, find your nearest rental facility;
waterproof, comfortable, warm winter clothing;
face mask, in compliance with COVID-19 safety protocol;
hat, gloves, sunglasses and sun cream;backpack with a snack and a hot drink in a thermos;
an avalanche self-rescue kit is MANDATORY 'where, due to snow and weather conditions, there is an avalanche risk’ (Art.26 Legislative Decree 40 of 28 February 2021). The kit consists of an ARTVA avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, and make sure you know how to use them before going on any excursion;
