Safety information

To undertake a mountain hike, we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your preparation. If in doubt, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices;
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route to follow and the operating hours of the lifts, if your itinerary requires their use. Remember that the passability of mountain routes is strictly linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, inform yourself well about the route and its conditions before departure;
  • leave information about your itinerary, estimated return time, and bring your mobile phone; pay attention to signs and markings found on the route: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white markings on stones or trees;
  • call 112 to alert emergency services in case of accident;
  • book in advance the malga or refuge where you plan to stop to eat or sleep;
  • never leave waste on the mountain, and if possible, avoid leaving it at refuges or malgas you visit;
  • if you see wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the path you are following, not approach too closely, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and frightening them.

ANTI COVID-19 RULES:

  • the use of masks must be respected even in the mountains;
  • keep a safety distance of at least 2 meters from others;
  • avoid sharing personal effects, tools, and water bottles or flasks with others;
  • carry hand sanitizer to frequently disinfect hands and surfaces;

Starting point

loc. Cavallar - Rabbi

Directions

After leaving the car in the parking lot at loc. Cavallar, go back to the entrance of the parking lot and turn right to rejoin the forest road. This will be your guide, and you must stay on it until you reach Malga Caldesa, which you will reach in about an hour and a half of walking. Along the way, take a moment to breathe in the nature: you are in the Stelvio National Park!

If you like to venture into the woods, the route offers shortcuts through the SAT108 and SAT130 trails, which reconnect at several points to the forest road.

From June to September, a shuttle bus service line Stelviobus Rabbi reaches the malga directly, if you really don’t want to walk but want to enjoy the beautiful views and the tranquility of the pastures.

Where to park

Loc. Cavallar, accessible from Piazzola di Rabbi.

We recommend reaching the parking lot early in the morning, especially on busy days, because its capacity is limited.

To undertake a mountain hike, it is always useful to:

  • wear trekking boots suitable for uneven, irregular, and wet ground, long pants, a hat, and sunglasses;
  • put a waterproof jacket, a fleece sweater, hat and gloves, sunscreen, and minimum change of clothes in your backpack;
  • bring a water bottle and snacks for energy drops (nuts, bars, or chocolate);
  • do not forget a camera or mobile phone to capture the views and scenes you like the most. If you want, you can share them on social media using #visitvaldisole and #spazioaltuotempo
