Suggestions

The alpine hut is accessible by car, but only with a special permit that must be requested from the Municipality of Malè.

Safety information

To enjoy a safe mountain hike, we suggest you:
  • Choose a route suited to your level of fitness. If in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices
  • Plan your hike in advance: check the weather forecast, the trail you'll follow, and the opening hours of any lift facilities if included in your route. Remember that trail conditions in the mountains depend on natural events, environmental changes, and weather conditions. Always get up-to-date information about the route before setting out
  • Leave details of your itinerary and estimated return time with someone, and carry your mobile phone with you
  • Follow signs and markers along the route: Stelvio National Park signs, red and white SAT signs, and red and white trail markings on rocks or trees
  • Book your meal or overnight stay in huts or mountain dairies (malghe) in advance
  • Never leave waste at high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it even at huts or dairies you visit
  • If you spot wildlife along the way, stay on the trail, don’t get too close, avoid shouting, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing and scaring the animals

Starting point

Rabbi Fonti

Directions

Starting from Rabbi Fonti, follow trail SAT 109 along a forest dirt road that climbs steadily and leads to Malga Monte Sole after about 9 kilometers. We recommend taking a break here to admire the view over the Val di Rabbi and the surrounding peaks while enjoying delicious dishes from the Solandro tradition. After the hut, follow the signs to Malga Villar Alta, which is reached after another 2.5 kilometers through green alpine meadows.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE:

You can also reach Malga Villar Alta from the Fontanon parking area by following the signs to Malga Cercen Bassa and then continuing on to Malga Villar.

Public transportation

You can reach Rabbi Fonti with the MALÈ - RABBI BAGNI - SOMRABBI line bus (download the timetables for outbound and return trips) up to the Rabbi Bagni stop.

How to get there

Follow the SS42 and at the junction for Terzolas center, turn right and take Via Nazionale. At the roundabout, take the second exit towards Val di Rabbi and follow the SP86 until you reach Rabbi Bagni.

Where to park

You can leave the car in the parking lots you will find in Rabbi Bagni near the starting point of the excursion.
When heading out for a mountain hike, it’s always useful to:
  • Wear hiking boots suitable for uneven, rocky or wet terrain, long pants, a sun hat and sunglasses
  • Pack a waterproof jacket, a fleece, hat and gloves, sunscreen, and a basic change of clothes
  • Bring a water bottle and some snacks for energy (such as dried fruit, energy bars or chocolate)
  • Don’t forget your camera or phone to capture the views and your favorite moments. If you like, share them on social media using the hashtag #visitvaldisole
