Safety information

To embark on a mountain hike, we recommend:
  • choosing a route suited to your level of fitness. If in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices
  • preparing your hike: check the weather forecast, your route, and the lift schedules, if your itinerary requires them. Remember that the feasibility of mountain trails is strictly dependent on the prevailing conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. Therefore, be sure to check the route and its conditions before setting out.
  • Leave information about your itinerary and approximate return time, and bring your cell phone with you.
  • Pay attention to the directions and signs along the route: Stelvio National Park signs, red and white SAT signs, and red and white brushstrokes on rocks or trees.
  • Book in advance the mountain hut or refuge where you intend to stop for food or sleep.
  • Never abandon waste at high altitudes, and if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or mountain huts you will visit.
  • If you spot wild animals along the route, please stay on the trail you are walking on. Don't get too close, don't shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing them and scaring them.

Starting point

Malga Panciana

Directions

The hike starts at Malga Panciana, at the arrival point of the Copai - Malga Panciana cable car (1,882 meters). Here, you'll find a trail with a moderate climb that leads to a scenic plateau offering outstanding views. From here, you'll continue along a fairly flat, slightly ascending path that reaches the Alpe Daolasa Refuge and the Solander Refuge at 2,045 meters (also accessible by ski lift). Travel time: 1 hour. The trail continues to Lago delle Malghette, which can be reached by initially descending the ski slope and then following an easy path to the right. From here, you return to Malga Panciana via the outward route (2 hours).

This trail is recommended for the visually impaired.

From Alpe Daolasa (2,045 m), follow the signs for the Sentiero dei Pastori (Shepherds' Path). The trail extends to Lago delle Malghette, which can be reached via a simple walk through the woods. It begins with a descent along the ski slope, then continues along an easy path to the right until reaching the Lago delle Malghette alpine oasis. From the refuge located below the lake, follow SAT trail no. 201, first toward the Orso Bruno refuge, then descend, following the signs, along the dirt road to Malga Panciana. From there, follow the Sentiero dei Pastori (Shepherds' Path) back to the starting point.

Difficulty level: easy-medium

Tread type: The trail begins downhill on soft grass until it intersects the Malghette ski slope. There are flat bridges along the first section. The second section of the trail winds through a fir and larch forest among rhododendrons, junipers, and Swiss pines.
