Excursion on a dirt road in Stelvio National Park

Malga Monte Sole is a pleasure not only for the eyes but also for the palate, with its zero-km traditional dishes creatively revisited by chef Matteo. The excellent cuisine, the sunny and panoramic position where it is located are an invitation to pause and enjoy the silence and the beauty of the view over Val di Rabbi.

Safety information

To face a mountain excursion we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your preparation. In case of doubt, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices;
  • prepare your excursion: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the schedules of the lift systems, if your itinerary involves their use. Remember that the accessibility of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, get well informed about the route and its conditions before setting out;
  • leave information about your itinerary, the approximate return time and carry your mobile phone;
  • pay attention to the signs and markers you find on the route: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white brush strokes on stones or trees;
  • raise the alarm by calling 112 in case of an accident; book in advance the hut or refuge where you intend to stop for eating or sleeping;
  • never abandon waste at altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or huts you visit;
  • if you spot wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the path you are on, not to approach too closely, not to shout and to keep your dog on a leash to avoid that instinctively it chases them, frightening them.

Starting point

Rabbi Baths

Directions

You can leave your car near the Rabbi thermal baths and start on foot, then after a few dozen meters take the road that goes up on the left, or you can choose to continue by car, taking the same dirt road on the left until the Fontanon parking lot. It is a rather narrow mountain road where many pedestrians pass, so if you choose this second option, please keep your speed to a minimum.
Walk along the forest road the entire time: the route is a bit long but don’t get discouraged, because the beauty you will find up there will more than reward your effort. Along the forest road you can enjoy the surrounding panorama without worrying too much about getting lost, because at every fork you will find reassuring signs to reach your destination. The development of the route will allow you to observe the change of vegetation, from forest to pastures, until you glimpse the mountain hut, with its unmistakable wooden terrace and the outdoor sauna, built inside a barrel.

After a refreshing break, descend along the same road but at the third hairpin turn you will encounter, follow the signs for the path to Malga Fratte Alta and Malga Fratte Bassa. At Malga Fratte Bassa follow the forest road up to the foot of the suspension bridge and continue to the right until you reach the parking lot.
