Safety information

To enjoy a safe mountain hike, we suggest you:

  • Choose a route suited to your level of fitness. If in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices
  • Plan your hike in advance: check the weather forecast, the trail you'll follow, and the opening hours of any lift facilities if included in your route. Remember that trail conditions in the mountains depend on natural events, environmental changes, and weather conditions. Always get up-to-date information about the route before setting out
  • Leave details of your itinerary and estimated return time with someone, and carry your mobile phone with you
  • Follow signs and markers along the route: Stelvio National Park signs, red and white SAT signs, and red and white trail markings on rocks or trees
  • Book your meal or overnight stay in huts or mountain dairies (malghe) in advance
  • Never leave waste at high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it even at huts or dairies you visit
  • If you spot wildlife along the way, stay on the trail, don’t get too close, avoid shouting, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing and scaring the animals

Starting point

Valbiolo Chairlift Parking

Directions

Once you’ve parked your car at the Valbiolo chairlift parking area at Passo del Tonale, follow the paved road that gently climbs with a steady and manageable slope toward the San Bartolomeo Hospice. After about 20 minutes of easy walking, you’ll reach Malga Tonale, located at 1,930 meters above sea level, where you can observe dairy cows spending the summer months. The return follows the same route as the ascent.

Once you're back at the Valbiolo parking area, we recommend visiting the Tonale Peat Bog, a vast wetland basin known for its exceptional biodiversity. It hosts numerous plant species typically found in arctic regions but extremely rare in the Alps, and is an ideal habitat for various amphibians, reptiles, and insects, including dragonflies and the alpine newt. It can be explored via an informative themed trail.

Public transportation

You can reach PASSO DEL TONALE by taking the MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - VERMIGLIO - TONALE line bus (download the timetables for the outbound and return journeys).

How to get there

Drive along the SS42 until you reach PASSO DEL TONALE.

Where to park

You can leave the car at the Valbiolo chairlift parking.
