Circular route with panoramic views in the Stelvio National Park.
A moderately difficult trail that traverses the wooded slopes of the Val del Monte, above Peio Fonti.The hike offers several panoramic views and is suitable for families with children due to the presence of animals (but strollers are not permitted!), while still allowing for a 700-meter elevation gain. The route is culturally and historically significant, featuring ancient larches, charcoal kilns, and a cheese dairy. It also has geological significance, highlighted by several explanatory panels, and botanically significant, due to the presence of numerous rare species and fauna, including marmots and mouflons.

Suggestions

The trail runs alongside the Val Comasine stream, a valley known for its spectacular blooms of rare alpine species and for its notable presence of marmots.

Safety information

When setting out on an excursion in the mountains, we suggest you:
  • choose a route suitable for your fitness level. When in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices;
  • get ready for your trip by checking the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the times for the cable cars or chair lifts, if you will be using them. Remember that the feasibility of routes in a mountain environment is closely linked to the contingent conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, changes in the environment and the weather conditions. For this reason, make sure you are well informed about the route and conditions before setting out;
  • tell someone about your route and what time you expect to return, and take your mobile phone with you;pay attention to the directions and signs that you find along the way: Stelvio Park signs, red and white SAT signs and red and white painted marks on rocks or trees;
  • raise the alarm by calling 112 in the event of an accident;
  • book the malga or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep in advance;
  • never leave litter in the mountains and, if possible, avoid leaving your rubbish at mountain refuges or malgas that you visit;
  • if you spot wild animals along the way, we invite you to stay on the path, not go too near, not shout and to keep your dog on a lead, to stop it instinctively chasing and scaring the animal.

Starting point

loc. Belvedere, Peio Fonti

Directions

The path initially develops in the forest and then gradually the view, like a fan, opens onto Val Comasine with its slopes used for pasture, dominated by the summit of Monte Boai. The path runs alongside the stream of Val Comasine, where spectacular blooms can be seen and where you will probably hear the whistles of marmots, which, alerted by human presence, give the alarm.

Once you reach Malga Val Comasine at 2088 meters, after passing the ruins of the old malga with wooden inserts dating back to the 1700s, you will probably be welcomed by the shepherd and cheesemaker. At Malga Val Comasine you can purchase excellent local cheese, Casolét, and the fantastic malga butter, with its unmistakable yellowish color, a sign of genuineness (for a moment forget cholesterol and enjoy it: it’s truly a marvel!).

After the 'cheese break,' continue through the ancient larch forest above Malga Mason (2178 m). Take a moment to observe them: they are estimated to be between 500 and 650 years old, and their history is linked to the exploitation of the iron mines of Comasine. In the area, you can also see ancient charcoal kilns. The circular route takes you back to Malga Val Comasine, then returns to the Belvedere of Peio Fonti.
