Suggestions

Plan a stop at Malga Polinar to enjoy the dishes of our tradition and a further refreshing stop at the Kneipp path on your return.

Safety information

To undertake a mountain hike we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your preparation.
  • If in doubt, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices;
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the operating times of the lifts, if your itinerary requires their use. Remember that the passability of paths in a mountain environment is strictly linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason inform yourself well on the route and its conditions before leaving;
  • leave information about your itinerary, estimated return time and bring your mobile phone;
  • pay attention to the signs you find on the route: Stelvio Park signs, SAT white and red signs and red and white strokes on stones or trees;
  • raise the alarm by calling 112, in case of accident;
  • reserve in advance the malga or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep;
  • never leave waste at altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it near the refuges or malgas you visit;
  • if you spot wild animals along the way, we invite you to stay on the path you are following, not get too close, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash, to prevent it from instinctively chasing them and frightening them.

ANTI COVID-19 RULES:

  • mask use must be respected even in the mountains;
  • keep a safety distance of at least 2 meters from people;
  • avoid exchanging personal effects, tools and water bottles with other people;
  • bring hand sanitizer, to frequently disinfect hands and surfaces;

Starting point

Parking Kneipp path at San Bernardo

Directions

Walking among beautiful mountain huts, witnesses of the farming past of Val di Rabbi, you will enter the forest, where the forest road will start to climb, passing among tall fir trees, and will soon transform into an old mule track that zigzags up the mountainside.
The origin of this route is very ancient: built by hand, stone by stone, it once allowed reaching the pasture of the malga every spring with the herds to be taken to the alpine pasture and to regularly return to the valley every autumn. Step by step you will see the forest change: the firs will give way to larches, becoming increasingly sparse, until the horizon opens near Malga Polinar.
At the malga we suggest you savor the traditional dishes and purchase its exquisite typical products.
The last part of the return will lead you to discover a part of the Valorz path, along which you will spot some installations representing forest animals, made with natural materials by the artist Maurizio Misseroni and accompanied by the verses of the poet Teresa Girardi.

You can reach the malga in about 2 hours' walk from the Plaze dei Forni parking lot, the last point in Val di Rabbi accessible by car during the summer period, when the Stelviobus Rabbi shuttle service is active.
